Treats That Goats Can Eat

Goats are herbivores and their diets consist of brush, grass, trees and hay. For pet goats, attention and petting is often the best treat, but you can also give your goat special foods as treats. Goats are actually pickier than portrayed, and regardless of what the treat is, it must be clean for them to eat it. It is also very important to give in moderation for health reasons.
  1. Raisins

    • Only feed your goat a few raisins. Try giving them to the goat one at a time to prolong the treat.

Giving your goat too many raisins may cause digestive problems.

    Corn Chips

    • Feed your goat a couple corn chips. Also give them one at a time so that the goat can appreciate the treat.

Too many corn chips may also cause digestive problems.

    Bread and Crackers

    • Feed the goat one or two slices of bread as a treat or reward for good behavior. A few crackers (some people use animal crackers) can also serve as a safe, enjoyable treat.

Bread should never be used as a goat's main diet. Give these treats in small amounts, no more than once a day, to avoid digestive problems.

    Fruits and Vegetables

    • Carrots, apples and cabbage are common items fed to goats as treats. You can also try broccoli, lettuce, turnips, radishes or squash. If the vegetable is clean and fresh, the goat will eat it.

Again, do not overfeed these treats to your goats or your goat may suffer digestive problems. Feed the treats in small portions, and no more than once a day.

    Dangerous Treats

    • While goats may munch on anything they can reach, there are a few items that can be harmful to a goat's health.

Do not feed your goat meat of any type, including cat or dog food. Goats are herbivores, and the presence of meat in their digestive system can cause serious problems.

Do not feed your goat paper or cigarettes. It is a myth that these products may be used to worm a goat; paper and cigarettes contain toxins that can cause more serious problems. Consult a veterinarian for issues with worms.

Research the plants on your property that may be toxic to goats. These include (but are not limited to) holly trees and bushes, nightshade, rhododendron, some ornamental plants and wilted leaves from plum, cherry and peach trees.
