Things You'll Need
- Mower or tractor
- Grass cuttings
- Rake
Instructions
Wait until you have a bushy area of grassland available to mow. This will give you a larger yield of hay and enough food to last through a few weeks. Three inches or more in length is appropriate for cutting.
Mow the grassy area with a lawn mower or tractor. Choose a sunny day to do this as it means the grass can dry out more quickly.
Rake up all the grass clippings in a big heap. Leave the heap in the field or transfer it inside a barn, or fenced off area. Make sure it is away from the goats as they might be tempted to nibble on it.
Wait for the grass to dry out in the sun. Spreading out the grass over a concrete area will make this process quicker and is suitable for smaller amounts. It will turn from green to a yellowy color -- this is the new hay for your goats.
Store the hay in a dry area, preferably in a box to prevent it from becoming damp. Then, feed handfuls to your goat or provide a hay feeder stuffed with your newly made hay.
