How to Tell If a Goat Has a Temperature

Taking your goat's temperature is the first step in diagnosing any health issues that the animal may have. The most accurate way to check the internal body temperature of your goat is through the use of a rectal thermometer. Young goats, also known as kids, can be laid across the lap to check temperature. Large goats can have their temperature taken while standing, this may require the assistance of a helper to hold the goat while you take it's temperature.

Instructions

    • 1

Lubricate the end of the thermometer with petroleum jelly. This makes it easier to insert the thermometer.

    • 2

Shake the thermometer up and down to ensure that the mercury is settled in the bottom bulb of the thermometer. If you are using a digital thermometer yo can skip this step as it is ready to read a temperature once turned on.

    • 3

Insert the thermometer 2 1/2 inches into the goat's rectum.

    • 4

Hold the thermometer in place for 2 minutes; this gives the thermometer enough time to give an accurate reading. If you are using a digital thermometer, a beep will sound when the reading time is complete.

    • 5

Remove the thermometer from the goat and note the temperature reading.

    • 6

Wipe the thermometer down with an alcohol wipe after each use to sterilize it.
