Instructions
Break the ice when drinking water becomes frozen and replenish bowls with fresh, tepid water.
Slightly heat food,to raise the body temperature of the goats.
Secure doors on the goats' shelter. Prevent cold air entering by using draft excluders, blocking any gaps in the shelter with planks of wood, or by stacking hay or straw by the door.
Avoid heating the shelter too much -- you should only usea few heat bulbs. A sudden change in temperature after being outside will be difficult for goats to endure.
Scatter gravel or place bricks on the ground to reduce likelihood of goats slipping on ice. Clear ice and snow for the goats' paddock as often as possible.
Check on goats often to make sure they are not too cold.
How to Care for Pigmy Goats in Cold Climates
Pygmy goats are robust animals that can withstand hot and cold climates, provided they receive sufficient care. A thick coat of hollow hair keeps the goats warm during the winter months, allowing them to survive in temperatures as low as -40 degrees fahrenheit. However, pygmy goats can only tolerate very cold temperatures for short lengths of time. To keep goats permanently in cold climates, owners need to take precautions to prevent pneumonia.
