How to Keep a Goat in a Fenced Area

Goats can be a challenge to keep in a fenced area. They are notorious for jumping over the tallest fences. Even the most expensive fences, if not maintained regularly, can be penetrated by a curious goat. No matter what type of fencing you choose for your goats, it is important to walk the fence line and fix immediately any place where a goat could get through, under or over. Being vigilant is much more important than spending a lot of money.

Instructions

Use goat net wire fencing. Goat net wire is specifically designed to keep goats and sheep in their pastures. The squares of wire are spaced out enough so that if the goat pokes his head through, he won't get caught and potentially starve or be susceptible to predators.

Place a strand of barbed wire over the top of your woven wire fence line. The barbed wire deters the goat from jumping over the fence.

Use electric fence netting to keep goats in place. In order for electric fencing to be effective, however, you will have to introduce your goat to the fence by leading her up to it and letting her get shocked a few times.

Give your goats things to climb and jump on. Goats like to play and they are very active. Giving them ramps to run up and down on, barrels to jump on and over and even the large rubber balls made for horses can make their pen a more attractive place to stay.

Locate your goat pen away from your garden. A goat pen near the garden is practically an invitation for broken fences and disappearing plants.
