Can You Give Wormer to a Nursing Goat?

Goats are subject to internal parasites, including tapeworms, roundworms, and nematodes. Not all worming medications are approved for does that are nursing. The following wormers are FDA approved for use in nursing and pregnant goats.
  1. Fenbendazole

    • Fenbendezole is sold under the trade names Safe-Guard and Panacur. Fenbendazole is effective against gastrointestinal parasites such as nematodes, tapeworms and roundworms. It is safe for use in pregnant and lactating does. The dosage is 5-10 milligrams per kilogram of body weight, depending on the type of worm infestation.

    Morantel

    • Morantel is sold under the trade names Rumital, Rumatel, and Nematel. It is approved for use in lactating and pregnant does. It is effective against nematodes and roundworms, but not tapeworms. The dose is 10 milligrams per kilogram of body weight.

    Thiabendazole

    • Thiabendazole is sold under the generic name, and the trade names TBZ and Ominzole. It is approved for pregnant and lactating does and protects against nematodes. The dosage is 44-66 milligrams per kilogram of body weight. Some parasites are resistant to this drug. Start at the lower end of the dosage and increase if you don't get results.

    Levamisole

    • Levamisole is sold under the trade names Levasol, Tramisole, and Ripercol. It is safe for use in pregnant and lactating does. It is effective against roundworms and nematodes, but not tapeworms. The dosage is 8 milligrams per kilogram of body weight.
