How to Calculate the Due Date of a Nubian Doe

It's best to know when your Nubian doe will kid, especially if she is a first-time mother or has previously had problems giving birth. Figuring out your Nubian goat's due date is a simple task if you know the breeding date. If you don't know the breeding date, there are ways to tell when the due date is drawing near. Know the signs of a heat cycle so you won't expect kids when your goat isn't pregnant.

Count 150 days from your Nubian doe's breeding date to arrive at her due date. She could deliver five days before or after that date. Goat gestation calculators are available on the Internet that can be used to easily calculate your goat's due date. There are also spreadsheets available for keeping track of heat cycles, breeding and kidding.

Watch for signs that your doe is in heat if you didn't witness her breeding. There's a possibility she's not pregnant even though she may look it. Some does will breed while pregnant, but most won't. If your goat shows interest in bucks, vocalizes more than normal, urinates frequently, wags her tail, goes off her feed and possibly mounts other does, she is probably in heat and is not pregnant.

Have an ultrasound test performed on your goat if you want to be certain she's pregnant. You'll need to wait seven to eight weeks into the pregnancy before running the test. A blood test can also be used to diagnose a pregnancy.

Pay close attention to signs that your goat may be close to kidding if you don't know the exact breeding date. Things to watch for, according to the book "Raising Meat Goats," are a very full udder that appears shiny and has teats that stick out to the side, mucus attached to the vulva, and restlessness. Another indication is when the ligaments around the tail bone soften. You will probably find yourself getting up during the night to check on the mother-to-be until the kids are safely delivered.
