Instructions
Use a fine-toothed saw to cut a 4 to 5-foot piece of PVC pipe in half lengthwise. The pipe should be 4 inches in diameter.
Dig two holes in the ground. The distance of the holes should be the length of the PVC piping plus an additional foot. Each hole should be 1 foot in diameter and 2 feet deep. You can either dig the holes with a shovel or use a post-hole digger.
Insert a pole into each hole. The pole should be 4 inches by 4 inches by 6 feet tall. Fill the hole with the loose soil. If desired, you can pour wet cement into the holes instead to hold the poles in place.
Attach a 2-inch-by-4-inch board to the top of the poles. It should stretch the entire length above the poles. Use a hammer and nails to attach it in place.
Trace the shape of the open end of the PVC pipes on a piece of scrap lumber that has been treated. Use a jigsaw to cut out the shape you traced. Cut out a second piece the same way.
Use wood screws and a screwdriver to attach the cutouts to the end of the PVC pipe to act as end caps. Use a drill to predrill three holes on each end of the pipe. Then use the screwdriver to insert the screws through the holes in the PVC and into the wood.
Insert an eye bolt into the top edge of each end cap.
Screw two hooks into the underside of the board you hung across the posts. They should be spaced 6 inches from each pole.
Attach a 3 1/2 foot length of chain to each of the hooks in the top board.
Use chain links to attach the chain to the end cap eye hooks. Adjust the height of the PVC as needed. It should be about 6 inches off the ground. If your goats are taller, you can shorten the chain even more to ensure the feeder is high enough that the goats cannot kick bedding into it.
Fill the PVC pipe with your preferred goat feed.
