Things You'll Need
- 1 square hay bale
- 2 cups corn syrup
- 1 gallon hot tap water
- 1 two-gallon bucket
- Large spoon
- Measuring cup
- Knife
- Optional:
- Hay shredder
- 20 gallon tub
- Shovel
Instructions
Standard Preparation
Put one gallon of hot tap water into the two-gallon bucket.
Mix two cups of corn syrup into the hot water with the spoon. The corn syrup will try to settle at the bottom of the bucket. Stir the mixture with a large spoon to dissolve the corn syrup.
Use the knife to cut the strings off the hay bale.
Separate the hay into sections. Hay is baled into preformed sections called flecks. There are usually 10 flecks of hay in one square bale.
Pour two cups of the corn syrup mixture onto each fleck of hay. Pour slowly so the hay will absorb the mixture. If you pour to fast, the mixture will run through the hay and onto the ground.
Feed the hay to your goats out of a hay ring or rack to help prevent wasting.
Shredded Hay Method
Run one bale of hay through the hay shredder. This will give you hay that is the consistency of grain. Put the shredded hay into the 20-gallon tub.
Put one gallon of hot tap water into your bucket.
Dissolve two cups of corn syrup into the water.
Pour the corn syrup mixture over the shredded hay.
Mix the hay and corn syrup mixture together with the shovel. Make sure the corn syrup mixture is evenly distributed. Feed this mixture as you would feed grain.
