How to Train a Goat for an Underground Fence

An underground, or invisible, fence is an increasingly popular device because of its lower cost when compared with conventional fencing. The gravamen of an underground fence is the use of a buried wire, which sends a small electrical shock out to animals attempting to cross the fence when active. The shock is delivered by their collars. While goats are efficient at escaping normal fencing, they will have difficulty getting through an underground fence, as there is no area to cross that will not subject them to the charged current.

Place a series of small flags in the ground along the boundary of the fence. This will provide your goat with visual feedback regarding the location of the fence, allowing him to better ascertain his effective boundaries. Without the placing of flags, the goat will have difficulty understanding exactly where he can and cannot go, so be as accurate as possible with your placement.

Use a tether or leash to lead your goat close to the boundary of the fence, allowing him to come close enough so the warning beeping on their collar starts. When the beeping starts, immediately reverse direction, leading your goat away from the fence before he gets close enough to experience a shock. This will train your goat on the proper way to avoid being punished for crossing the underground fence.

Lead your goat past the boundary once or twice to allow him to experience the effects of disobeying the warning sensors and flags. Do not make a habit of doing this, lest your goat start to develop wariness about being led around. However, doing this once or twice will provide sufficient negative feedback to allow your goat to adhere to the underground fence without further coaxing on your part.
