How to Choose a Boer Show Goat

Boer goats are a high quality animal mainly used for breeding. They're pricier than other breeds of goat because of their high quality genetic makeup. If you're interested in boer goats and you want to choose a boer goat show, there are several options.

Instructions

Determine the quality of your boer goat. Some shows require your boer goat be 100 percent pure; however, other shows offer categories for quarter-blood, half-blood and three-quarter blood boer goats.

Check with your school's farm and agriculture teacher. Schools with FFA (Future Farmers of America) programs and 4-H programs often provide the option for students to show animals, including boer goats. The class counts towards your final credits, but you often have to work with your animal on your own time outside the classroom.

Find county fairs in your area. County fairs offer a variety of categories, and you often take away a decent amount of money if you win. Check all counties within driving distance because you can compete in a variety of boer goat shows associated with these fairs.

Look into the American Boer Goat Association National Show. This show allows you to compete against boer goat showers across the country. You must have an active membership in the ABGA to compete. The ABGA also has a Sanctioned Show for members.

Get your children involved with junior shows. Children who are old enough to handle a goat are sometimes old enough to compete in a boer goat show. The Junior Meat Goat Show Circuit is a great place to start if you have a child interested in showing boer goats.
