1. Pacific walrus (_Odobenus rosmarus divergens_): This subspecies is found in the Pacific Arctic, including the Bering Sea, Chukchi Sea, and Laptev Sea. It is the largest of the three subspecies and can grow up to 12 feet long and weigh up to 4,000 pounds. Pacific walruses have long, curved tusks that can be up to 3 feet long.
2. Atlantic walrus (_Odobenus rosmarus rosmarus_): This subspecies is found in the North Atlantic Ocean, primarily around Greenland, Canada, and Norway. It is slightly smaller than the Pacific walrus, with males reaching a maximum length of about 10 feet and weighing up to 3,500 pounds. Atlantic walruses have shorter, straighter tusks than Pacific walruses.
3. Laptev walrus (_Odobenus rosmarus laptevi_): This subspecies is found in the Laptev Sea, which is part of the Arctic Ocean. It is the smallest of the three subspecies and is only found in a small area of the Arctic. Laptev walruses have tusks that are intermediate in size between the Pacific and Atlantic walruses.
While these three subspecies are recognized, some scientists believe that there may be additional subspecies that have not yet been officially identified.
