How to Shave a Boer Goat to Show

Livestock shows allow owners of farm animals to enter their animals into a competition that judges them on their breeding. Boer goats are a popular livestock entry, and they need to be groomed properly when entered in a competition. Shearing a Boer goat is a straightforward task that, when performed properly, can add a competitive edge to your entry.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the goat in a small pen or tie it to a fence or post. Goats do not typically enjoy being sheared and may try to escape. Use a hand to hold the goat steady and to keep it from shifting around too much.

    • 2

Using shears with on a 1/2-inch or 3/4-inch guard, trim the hair off the goat's body. Make sure it is an even shear, leaving no patchy spots or visible lines.

    • 3

Trim the goat's udder without a guard. Go slowly and be extremely careful, as the shears can cut or burn the goat, causing discomfort and leaving visible marks on the udder.

    • 4

Brush and groom the goat to smooth out the remaining hair. Perform a final inspection and snip off any remaining long hair.
