How to Clean a Goat's Sheath

Cleaning a goat's sheath is important to maintain its general health and prevent urinary-tract infection or disease contraction. The sheath can easily be cleaned at home using soap and a washcloth, saving you the expense of a veterinarian visit. It's important to keep the goat calm and subdued to prevent injury to the goat or the person cleaning the sheath. Goat sheaths should always be cleaned prior to any insemination procedures, and as a first step in treating stones.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear disposable latex gloves to prevent the spread of any current infections. Fill the bucket with warm water for sanitation and animal comfort. Add soap and agitate to mix.

    • 2

Lay the goat on its side and roll the head up toward the tail. Ask someone to hold the goat in place while you clean the sheath.

    • 3

Stand over the goat with its head behind yours, between your legs. Pull the sheath back with one hand and hold taut.

    • 4

Dip the washcloth in warm soapy water and apply over the entire sheath. Rub vigorously, rinse and repeat the process.

    • 5

Examine the penis for signs of infection or inflammation. If the goat suffers from urinary calculi, cut the uretha process to encourage urine dribble.

    • 6

Towel the area dry before relaxing your grip on the sheath.
