How to Bathe a Hen

Hens typically do not need to be bathed, but if you are taking your hen to a show or she has become very dirty somehow, a bath may be necessary. While bathing a hen, remember that she should be kept warm and comfortable. Some hens even go to sleep when they are bathed. Bathe your hen thoroughly, and if you are taking the animal to a show, bathe three to four days in advance to allow the feathers time to dry thoroughly. You can bathe the hen the day of the show, but she must be completely dry before entering the show ring.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill two washtubs halfway with warm water.

    • 2

Lower your hen into one washtub. Do this slowly to acclimate her to the water. Restrain her legs with one hand and her wings with the other as she may initially panic.

    • 3

Apply a bird shampoo or baby shampoo to the hen's legs, feet and vent area --- the fluffy section between her legs. These are often the dirtiest parts of the hen. Soak them as you clean the rest of the bird.

    • 4

Lather the shampoo into the rest of the hen's feathers, working slowly and thoroughly.

    • 5

Rinse the hen by placing her in the second tub. Pour the water over the hen's body, using a cup. Rinse away all traces of the shampoo.

    • 6

Wrap the hen in a towel. Allow her head and legs to be exposed.

    • 7

Scrub the hen's feet and nails gently with a damp toothbrush to remove any grime.

    • 8

Dry the hen thoroughly with a dry towel or blow-dry her with a hair dryer on a "Cool" or "Warm" setting.
