How to Shear Standing Sheep

Shearing sheep is something done annually to remove their wool. In addition to being used to create wool garments, sheep wool does not fall off naturally and needs to be sheared so the sheep is more comfortable. This is done in the spring and is usually done on a shearing table while the sheep is lying down. This makes it a much easier and faster project because it is easier to move the sheep and kinder to the back. However, if a sheep needs to be sheared standing it should be done carefully and with care since the sheep can move more and the shearer will be bent over.

Instructions

Secure the sheep in a pen or confined area. Ideally, its head will be held still by a second person or tied through a boarded fence with wide slats so it can't move too much. A sheep that is used to standing still may only need to be tied in a pen to keep it still.

Brush the sheep's fleece to remove the dirt and card it to straighten it. Carding can be done with a metal dog comb or specifically designed carders. Add a sheep dip or water to the sheep to make clipping go smoother.

Shear the sheep using electric clippers or shears. Start at the neck and clip the wool backwards, gently peeling the wool back as it comes off. Collect the wool in bags as it comes off to keep it clean.
