How to Clip a Topline

A heifer's topline is the top of her body along her spine from her withers to her tail. While there are many techniques for clipping the topline of a show heifer, they all accomplish the same objective; to level the heifer's back from the side, and give it a sharp or ridged appearance from behind. This is done by standing up and blending the hair from 2 inches on either side of the spine.

Instructions

    • 1

Bathe the heifer to remove all dirt and oils from her coat. This will help the topline stand up.

    • 2

Brush the hair from either side of the spine upward over the the center of the spine so that it forms a peak. Work from the tail of the animal until you reach the wither, where the hair changes direction; then reverse and work from the head back toward the tail.

    • 3

Use a blow dryer to assist the hair in remaining upright. You may also apply some hairspray if needed.

    • 4

Clip the hair along both sides of the peak you created, blending the hair length smoothly from the top into the body of the heifer.

    • 5

Clip any stray hairs with scissors when you are finished.

    • 6

Brush away excess clippings with a soft brush or use blow dryer to blow them away.
