How to Use Electric Shears on Pets

When the weather heats up, or your pet's hair gets too long, sometimes a little trim is necessary to keep him cool. People have been shearing their animals for centuries, and in some cases, as with sheep, the fur is used to make wool thread. Check with your vet before you shear your animals, as some animals may be traumatized by electric shears and require you to take them to a professional.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain a mild tranquilizer from your vet before you try to trim your pet with electric shears. Give the tranquilizer time to take effect, as the shearing process may be traumatic for some pets.

    • 2

Have someone else hold your pet still. Make sure your shearing partner holds your pet steadily but gently so she doesn't spook or harm the animal.

    • 3

Allow the animal to smell the shears for a few minutes before turning them on. Step back a few feet before turning them on, and show them to the animal again, allowing him time to become familiar with the sound.

    • 4

Position yourself so you can move freely around the animal while working, ensuring that no sudden movements spook the animal.

    • 5

Shave the animal carefully, running the electric clippers from front to back in smooth lines. Make sure you do not catch the animal's skin in the clippers, as the thinness of the skin could result in accidental cuts and trauma to the animal.
