How to Groom and Fit a Show Steer

Show steers are young bulls used as beef animals. Show steer events award owners who take exceptional care of their bulls with recognition that results in a higher price for the animal during sale at the 18-month choice grade mark. The most important thing to keep in mind with any show steer is that you have a good relationship with the animal before you intend to show it. Otherwise, the steer will fight you during the entire grooming process and refuse to cooperate at the show.

Instructions

    • 1

Spend some time in the steer's stall, just petting it and talking to it.

    • 2

Place the halter on the steer and walk it to a cement area for washing. Tie the steer to a post so that it cannot run away.

    • 3

Turn the hose on low and gently run the water over the steer's back. If the steer is acting nervously, calm it with some petting and speak to it in a reassuring tone.

    • 4

Apply a small amount of livestock shampoo to the steer's back and sides. Do not apply too much, as it can cause the steer's hair to fall out. Thoroughly rinse out all the soap.

    • 5

Re-rinse the steer daily with just water to keep the coat shiny and the hair in place.

    • 6

Consult a professional livestock groomer when you are ready to begin clipping the animal. Every steer requires a different type of clipping to look the best in the ring.
