How to Build Hog Pens for Breeding

A hog breeding pen is a narrow pen designed to enclose the female sow, so the male can mount her. The pen is just wide enough for the female. The female is led into the pen first and the male is then led in behind her. The female is trapped in the pen and cannot move forward (due to the closed front gate) and cannot move sideways, due to the thin enclosure. The male will instinctively mate with her. This practice may seem unfair to the female sow, but forced breeding is a part of farming.

Instructions

    • 1

Drive three fence posts 4 feet into the ground. Spread the posts in a line with 6 feet in between each post.

    • 2

Drive three fence posts into the ground, exactly 4 feet parallel from the posts in step one.

    • 3

Attach two fence panels to the outside of the posts on one side. The middle post will share two panels.

    • 4

Repeat step 3 with the other three posts.

    • 5

Attach two hinges to both ends of one side of the fence. The first hinge should be 1.5 feet from the ground. The second hinge should be 1.5 feet above the first.

    • 6

Attach a 4-by-4 gate to the hinges on both ends of the fence. One gate will serve as the front gate to let the hogs out and the other will serve as the back gate to let the hogs in.

    • 7

Attach latches on the non-hinged sides of the fence. Attach the other latch to the gate, so that when closed, the gate locks. This will keep the hogs in the pen.
