How to Make Gates for a Hog Trap

If you want to trap hogs that come into your yard, a hog trap is your best bet. You can build a hog trap that will capture hogs but will not cause them any injuries. If you do this, be sure not to re-release any hogs that become trapped. In many places, it is illegal to capture and re-release hogs without having them screened by a veterinarian for brucellosis and pseudorabies. When building a hog trap, the gate is one of the most major parts. Read on to learn how you can make a great one.

Instructions

    • 1

Using a saw, cut the gate for a hog trap from a piece of plywood that is half an inch thick. The gate should be three feet wide and four to eight feet high.

    • 2

Slide the gate into one runner on each side. Make the runners out of one eight foot long 1"x4" board between two eight foot long 2"x6" boards. Hold the runners apart with a 2"x4" attached to the top and bottom of each runner.

    • 3

Make the door frame stable by attaching 2"x6" diagonal braces to the front and back of it.

    • 4

Hold up the gate by tying a piece of quarter-inch braided nylon rope to the top of the door, and then running the rope through the eyebolt at the top of the gate frame.

Attach a latch to the inside of the side runner with a screw. When the latch is pushed out of the way, the door should be able to be lifted to the open position and the latch should be held open by the door. When the door drops, the latch should clear the top of the closed door and swing over it. This will prevent the hogs from escaping through the door.
