Determine the breed of hog that you want to raise. Thorough research online can provide information on the different types of hogs. Also ask people who are knowledgeable about them, such as store owners who sell pig supplies and equipment. They may be able to refer you to reputable pig breeders.

Prepare everything you need before bringing your hog home. If your hog is going to roam outdoors, install a secure fence to keep it from going onto other people's property. Use either hog wire or an electric fence, and make sure that it is buried at least six inches below the ground for extra security. Provide a well-ventilated shed to protect your hog from the outside elements.

Feed your hog plenty of fresh greens, hay and high-protein grain once daily in addition to grazing. Allow a healthy hog to graze, as this will provide adequate exercise as well as a fresh supply of vegetation. Keep fresh water available. Hogs may drink approximately three gallons of water daily.

Deworm your hog at least every four to six weeks with an Anthelmintic (a drug that expels parasitic worms). You can purchase it at your local farm supply store or from your veterinarian.
