How to Raise Blue Butt Pigs

Blue butt pigs are a cross between a Hampshire pig and either a Yorkshire or a Chester White pig. These pigs are white in color with gray or bluish bottoms. Caring for these pigs is the same as caring for any farm pig. They are intelligent animals that require basic cleanliness, enough to eat and drink and a suitable living environment.

Instructions

Prepare a living space for your new blue butt pig. Pigs need shelter, where they can get out of the sun and be secure at night. A three-sided shed works well. They also need access to mud, which they use to cool themselves during the day. In addition, they need enough space so they can sleep and eat in cleanliness. Pigs are fastidious creatures, despite their reputation to the contrary.

Provide your pigs with plenty of water. Adult blue butt pigs drink 3 gallons each, every day. Fresh, clean water is essential for healthy pigs. Pigs are omnivores and will eat just about anything. Feed your pigs a natural grain diet, supplemented by kitchen and garden scraps. Avoid feeding too much protein, as this can be hard on the pig's intestines. Pigs can be allowed to forage if you have pasture land available.

Spend time with your pigs. They are very smart and highly social animals. They are generally gentle, but can become aggressive if they are very hungry. Make sure to visit them after they've eaten, and avoid going too long between feedings. Supervise children if they'll be spending time with pigs, which are large and clumsy animals and could accidentally hurt a small child.

Add granular de-wormer to your pig's feed at weaning. Pigs are prone to internal worms, which may stunt the young animal's growth. Keep their living space mucked so that the pigs don't root in their own manure. This will cut down on the chance of them picking up a parasite. The pig's pen should be cleaned during feeding time, while they are occupied. Their straw bedding and water need to be clean at all times.
