How to Build a Hut for Pigs

Just like in fairy tales, all pigs need a house to escape the Big Bad Wolf. Pig owners should provide pigs with a small hut, which will give them shelter from snow, rain and the summer sun. Be sure to choose a flat spot to place your pig's hut. An area sheltered from the wind for those that live in a cold climate is ideal. Use new, strong wood to ensure that no wolf might huff and puff and blow your pig's hut down.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the size of your pig hut. It will need to fit all your pigs lying down. Nail 2-by-4s in a rectangular shape the size of your desired hut.

    • 2

Frame the two shorter sides of your rectangular base and one of the longer sides. Make these walls all the same height. The walls should be twice the height of your pig. Affix 2-by-4s vertically to your rectangular base creating posts to build the walls from. Create solid walls by nailing flat lumber horizontally across the posts.

    • 3

When framing the fourth side make the vertical posts 2 inches taller than your other walls. This will allow the roof to slope, and create ventilation holes. Fill in the walls as you did the other walls, but leave an entrance opening large enough for your pig to fit through.

    • 4

Attach the corrugated iron roof to the hut. Allow it to slope towards the back of the hut for water drainage.

    • 5

Paint your pig's hut, lay down a thick fresh bed of straw and invite your pigs to take a look.
