DIY Bush Pig

Bush pigs, or bushpigs, are part of the pig family and related to the warthog. While similar to the warthog in looks, bush pigs tend to be larger, have smaller tusks and lack warts. They have long hair that ranges from red to black. If you own acres of private property and are interested in raising or conserving these animals, you'll need to know the basics for these wild omnivores. Bush pigs can live up to 20 years and, without predators (such as their primary predator, the leopard), can reproduce quickly.

Instructions

    • 1

Provide plenty of forested land, dry grass and wetlands for these animals. Bush pigs are originally from Southern Africa and are used to hot, moist vegetated areas, so first consider your climate.

    • 2

Wait until summer for the bush pigs to reproduce. Provide thick vegetation, dried grass and hollowed stumps so sows can nest. The dominant male reproduces with the females of the group.

    • 3

Provide plenty of roots, tubers, fruit, produce, plant bulbs and sugar cane. You may also feed bush pigs potatoes, corn and insect larvae.
