How to Raise Miniature Pigs

The miniature pig is a breed of pig that grows to a much smaller size than the average farm pig or hog. The most popular breed of miniature pig to have as a pet is the Vietnamese potbellied pig, which weighs around 50 lbs. when fully grown. Miniature pigs are intelligent and can be loyal pets, although some states do not allow them. Miniature pigs have different requirements than domesticated dogs and cats. Raising a miniature pig can be rewarding if you are fully prepared.

Instructions

    • 1

Provide your miniature pig with an outdoor, grassy, fenced-in area where he can eat grass and enjoy the outdoors. Include a large doghouse or other enclosure to protect your pig from the weather when needed.

    • 2

Designate a play room or area in your home for your miniature pig to play in, free of objects you don't want your pig getting into. Include toys, such as stuffed animals and dog toys, for your pig to play with, as well as a comfortable pet bed.

    • 3

Feed your miniature pig a diet of store-bought miniature pig food or a mix of grains and hay. Supplement this diet with fresh fruits and raw vegetables. Provide fresh water for your pig at all times.

    • 4

Take your miniature pig to a vet or farm animal veterinarian to have it spayed or neutered. Pigs that are not fixed are more likely to have health issues and negative behavior.

    • 5

Teach your pig to use a litter box while indoors by supplying it with a litter box filled with pine shavings or pine litter. Place some of your pig's droppings into the box to show your pig what it is used for; this may take practice.

    • 6

Introduce your miniature pig to other animals and pets by keeping both animals separated with leashes or a fence and allowing them to sniff and observe each other. Repeat this once or twice a day until both animals react positively, then allow them to have supervised time together before leaving them alone.
