How to Bait a Hog

To bait a hog successfully, learn about its habits and food preferences. Favorite natural food of hogs includes plant roots, acorns, grubs, salamanders, crawfish and even snakes. They love dry corn but smell sour mash better. Some hunters use both for the smell of the sour mash that attracts them, but the hogs would rather eat the corn if they have a choice. Another noteworthy fact: hogs definitely follow the track of raccoons. Wherever raccoons concentrate, the boars will be there.

Instructions

    • 1

Spray the cover scent on you liberally. Human scent alerts the hogs and they will not come if they find human scent around the bait.

    • 2

Choose a place where the soil is not very hard to dig; loose soil holes are best, for the hog will be tempted to dig more since it takes less effort. Find such places to use for hog bait. If you do not find any, dig the place a little until the soil loosens up.

    • 3

Dig four or five narrow holes about 2-3 feet deep at a distance of about 4-5 feet apart. The smell from the bait available in the next hole is usually an incentive the boars cannot resist as they look for more food.

    • 4

Set up game cameras in the area so you could observe the details of boars coming and eventually you would have an idea which boar or boars you would like to hunt.

    • 5

Place the sour mash and dry corn in the holes you have dug and sprinkle a liberal measure around the bait area.

    • 6

Sprinkle the raccoon urine all over the place and especially around the bait. The hogs have a symbiotic relationship with the raccoons. The raccoons find the food for them and the hogs eat it.

    • 7

Climb in the tree stand when you are ready with all the information you need. Go up the tree stand during the early evening, for the boars usually feed at night and if you come when they feed, you will alert them.
