What Are Micro Pigs?

Micro pigs are a miniature version of a full sized pig. These animals have been bred to be very small and are suitable as house pets. The micro pig, also known as a teacup pig, are the smallest breed of pig currently available. These animals are not considered potbelly pigs. Breeders combine different pig breeds and bloodlines to obtain the small size and confirmation of the micro. The popularity of these animals has boomed recently as many celebrities are adopting them as pets.
  1. Micro Size

    • Micro pigs are the smallest size category of pig currently available. At birth, they are approximately 10 oz. and are generally under 65 lbs once fully grown at 24 months. On rare occasions, micros have been known to be as small as 30 lbs when fully grown. As an adult, these animals typically stand around 14 inches tall. Even though they are called micros, these animals do not stay small and are similar in size to a large dog when they reach adulthood.

    Micro Characteristics

    • Micros have many different color schemes including black, white, brown, gray and pink. Many have spots, which make them more desirable to the general public. Micros have hair similar to other pig breeds. The hair is tough and bristly but it is not very noticeable on the micro. Since they have hair and not fur, micros are hypo-allergenic and shed very little, making them ideal pets for people with allergies.

    Micro Cost

    • The cost for micro pigs can range from $1,000 to $5,000 with the smallest pigs being the most expensive. Cost can also vary depending on their color scheme. Micros with spots or multiple colors are usually more costly depending on the attractiveness of the coat. As these animals grow in popularity, the price continues to rise.

    Micros as Household Pets

    • Pigs are exceedingly clean animals and can make wonderful household pets. They enjoy being around people and are easy to train. They do not require much exercise and are relatively low maintenance. Micros can be litter box trained, similar to a cat. These animals can live for up to 18 years, so purchasing one requires a long time commitment.

Pigs are very social creatures, so they are happiest when they have a least one companion pig or other animal. Similar to a dog, they require entertainment and can be destructive or develop signs of depression if left on their own.

    Micro Breeders

    • Micro pig breeders can be found all over the world due to the recent growth in popularity of the breed. Individuals who are interested in purchasing a micro should thoroughly research their breeder before buying. Breeders should be able to provide reputable references and show you examples of full grown micros that are at least 2 years old. There have been documented stories of people purchasing what they believed to be micro pigs from unknown breeders, only to have their piglets grow into full-sized pigs once they hit their growth spurts.
