How to Make a Hog Feed Trough

Pigs enjoy wallowing in mud to stay cool. They often knock over their feed trough to create the mud. Pig lose a valuable opportunity to gain weight -- and can even suffer health problems associated with starvation -- without constant access to food. A sturdy trough prevents tipping, and allows your pigs to eat their food instead of playing in it.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut three planks of wood for every pig you have. Cut the planks 1-foot wide and 1-foot long. Label one plank with an "A," the second with a "B" and the third with a "C."

    • 2

Don a pair of safety goggles and gloves to protect your eyes and skin. Feed your planks of wood into a table saw set to cut at a 67 1/2-degree angle. Cut the planks along their longest sides. Cut so the edges point inward, making the top of the boards shorter than the bottom.

    • 3

Cut two additional rectangles of wood. Cut the rectangles to the dimensions of 10-by-40 inches.

    • 4

Place the "A" board on a flat surface. Set the two rectangles to the right and left of the board, centering the 40-inch sides on the short ends of the "A" board. Drill through the wooden rectangles into the "A" board. Secure them in place.

    • 5

Set the "B" board on the right side of the "A" board. Position the "B" board so it meets seamlessly with the "A" board. Drill through the wooden rectangles -- and into the "B" board -- to secure it in place. Attach the "C" board in the same way you attached the "B" board.
