Proper Fencing for Potbelly Pigs

Installing a proper fence is essential for potbellied pig owners with pigs living outside or being left outside for any length of time. Pigs are curious and inquisitive by nature along with having an acute sense of smell. A fence can keep the potbellied pig from wandering off from home as well as from getting into trouble by rooting in flower beds or gardens. A good fence is also important for the protection of potbellied pigs from predators such as dogs and coyotes.

Instructions

  1. Installing the fence

    • 1

Measure the perimeter of the area to be fenced in for the pig or pigs and determine the amount of posts, panels, and clips/staples that will be needed. Each panel measures 16 feet, and there should be one post every 8 feet with a minimum of three clips/staples securing the fence to each post.

    • 2

Mark the placement of each post with a stake prior to setting the posts to ensure the posts are properly spaced 8 feet apart.

    • 3

Set posts using a post driver for metal posts or digging a hole for wooden posts. Posts should be set a minimum of 1 foot into the ground and the flat side of metal posts should be face the inside of the enclosure. Tamp down the soil around the posts to ensure that each post is securely set.

    • 4

Line the panel up with the posts. The ends of the panel should line up with a post on each side and one in the middle with the fence to be secured against the flat side of metal posts using fencing clips or to wooden posts using fencing staples.

    • 5

Begin securing the panel to the posts beginning with the center post. Use a hammer to secure the panel to the wooden post with the staples. Hook the clip around the metal post and use a set of pliers to twist the ends over the panel to secure the panel to the post.

    • 6

Finish securing the panel to the other two post and continue securing panels to the posts around the enclosure by lining the panels up to the posts with the panels end to end. Use the wire cutters to cut off any extra portion of fence.
