How to Plan & Build a Hog Feeder

Hog feeders are used by farmers to provide a continual supply of feed for hungry hogs. Hog are normally free-fed, eating as much as they want to pack on the pounds before they are sent to market. Commercial hog feeders aren't cheap, and farmers often turn to homemade feeders to provide proper nutrition for their animals.

Instructions

    • 1

Calculate how many feeders you need to build. A growing hog will eat approximately 8 pounds of food per day, and one 55-gallon feeder can hold approximately 50 pounds. One feeder can feed up to 6 hogs if refilled on a daily basis.

    • 2

Set an empty 55-gallon plastic drum horizontally on a level work bench and measure up 18 inches from the bottom with a measuring tape. Cut away the top of the drum with a saw to create the feeder base.

    • 3

Turn the base over to expose the bottom and drill 20-25 small holes through the plastic. These will act as drain holes to prevent moisture build-up in the base, which can lead to moldy feed. Spread the holes evenly over the base to allow for maximum drainage.

    • 4

Cut two, 8-inch long vertical slits in one end of each section of PVC pipe. The pipes serve as dispensers that hold fresh feed and refill the feeder throughout the day. Each slit should be at least 3/4-inch to let the feed filter down into the base as the hogs eat.

    • 5

Hold one section of PVC pipe vertically against one long side of the feeder, with the slits facing downward. Cut a small hole through the base on either side of the pipe, approximately halfway between the top and bottom of the base. Attach the pipe to the base using a zip tie.

    • 6

Place another pipe in the middle of the barrel, and one at the opposite side to complete the feeder. The feeder will resemble an "E" placed on its side, with a piece of pipe at each end and one in the middle to allow for even feed distribution.

Move the feeder to the hog pen, and fill each tube with hog feed. Pour the remaining feed in the bottom of the feeder, refilling the tubes daily to ensure the hogs have a steady supply of feed at all times.
