How to Install a Hog Wire Fence

Hog fencing panels make excellent pens for hogs and every other type of livestock. A hog panel is 16 feet long and 34 inches tall. Made from galvanized steel, they can stand up to the rooting strength of pigs. Because they are flexible, you can use them to make a fence in any size and shape you desire. Hog panels are easy to install and are durable enough to last for years.

  1. Rectangle Pen

Use four ground stakes to mark out a 48-foot by 32-foot rectangle where you want your pen to be. Starting at a corner and going down the fence line, drive a stake into the ground every eight feet. This will mark the placement of your posts.

Using the post driver, drive a steel post one foot into the ground at each of the ground stakes. Make sure the clip hooks on the post face out of the pen.

Install the hog fence panels one at a time starting at the corner. The spacing of the wire is different at the top and bottom. The closer spaced portion should always go at the bottom of your fence. With this in mind, place a panel toward the inside of the pen behind the steel posts.

Starting with the post in the center of the panel, use the fencing pliers to attach three panel clips to secure the panel to the post. Use one clip at the top and bottom and one in the middle. Panel clips fit under the clip hooks on the steel post and then twist around the panel. Secure the ends of the panel to the other two posts. Repeat this process with the next eight panels leaving the ninth and last panel unsecured. This will be your gate. Take the fencing wire and reinforce the first three corners by twisting two six-inch pieces of wire around the panels and posts. Put one piece of wire in between the top and middle clip and one in between the middle and bottom clip.

Take the last fence panel and set it into place. Use the fencing clips to secure the far end of the panel leaving the corner unattached. Secure the last corner with two six-inch pieces of fencing wire, one at the top and one at the bottom. This will allow you to remove the wire and pull the panel open as a gate.
