How to Neuter Hogs

Unless you are planning on using them for breeding purposes, male hogs should be neutered as quickly as possible. Neutering your hog will mean that it will spend more time focusing on eating and gaining weight than it will on its raging hormones. Neutered hogs are mellower and safer to be around than hogs that are left intact. Neutering hogs is something that you can do by yourself, without the assistance of a veterinarian, and it is something that can be done as soon as the pig is born.

Instructions

    • 1

Use earplugs to protect your ears. The cries of pigs, even little pigs, can damage your hearing.

    • 2

One person needs to hold onto the pig's hind legs, one leg in each hand. Tip the pig so that its hind legs are straight up in air. Pull the legs apart so that the pig's scrotum is accessible.

    • 3

The second person needs to tuck their fingers behind the pig's scrotum, holding it slightly away from the pig's body. You should be able to feel the testes with your fingertips.

    • 4

Slice the left side of the scrotal sack with the scalpel.

    • 5

Use your fingers to pull the testes from the scrotum.

    • 6

You will notice that there are two cords attaching the testicle to the pig's body. One is a white cord, which is the spermatic cord, and the other one is a red cord, which is a blood vessel.

    • 7

      Cut the spermatic cord.

    • 8

Pull of the testes until the red cord snaps. By pulling instead of cutting the blood vessel, you will automatically cauterize the cord and minimize the amount of bleeding.

    • 9

Repeat the process on the right side.

    • 10

Make sure that you keep the pig in a clean environment until the scrotal incision has healed.
