How to Build Box Stalls

Box stalls are basic box structures to temporarily contain one animal. They can be built to a standard dimension to fit cows or horses. They are used for restraint when the animal is getting medical help, grooming or maintenance. The animal enters the box stall from one end and exits through the other. Manufactured box stalls are typically made from welded pipe and are extremely heavy and hard to move. You can build one out of wood that is less expensive and can be moved by four people.

Instructions

    • 1

Place two 2-by-4-by-96-inch studs on the ground parallel to each other 72 inches apart. Place six 2-by-6-by-72-inch planks perpendicular on top of the 2-by-4 studs. Start flush from the bottom and place them side-by-side. Place one 2-by-6 flush at the top of the frame. Shoot four 2-inch staples through each 2-by-6 on the ends to secure the 2-by-6 studs to the 2-by-4 studs. These are the sides of the stall. Build two of them.

    • 2

Place two 2-by-4-by-96-inch studs on the ground parallel to each other 36 inches apart. Place one 2-by-4-by-36-inch stud perpendicular on top flush across the top and one perpendicular across the bottom to form a rectangular frame. Shoot two 2-inch staples through each corner to secure the frame together. Build two frames. These are the front and back of the box stall.

    • 3

Stand the four pieces up vertically to form the box. Shoot staples up vertically through the four 96-inch vertical legs of the front and back every six inches to secure the front and back to the sides.

    • 4

Place two pieces of the 36-by-48-inch plywood together flush. Shoot 1 1/2-inch staples randomly through the top piece of plywood into the bottom piece to form a double layer piece of plywood. This is to give the plywood extra strength. This is the door. Build two.

    • 5

Place two gate hinges each on the sides of the doors. Place one 12 inches from the top and one 12 inches from the bottom of the door. Screw them onto the doors using a cordless screw gun and 1 1/2-inch screws.

    • 6

Place a 2-by-4-by-24-inch block on the ground in front of the box stall. Stand the door on top of it vertically flush against the front of the stall. Screw the door to the stall using the other half of the gate hinge. Remove the block. Hang the door on the other side the same way.

    • 7

Screw a 12-inch piece of chain on one side of the door three inches from the edge, spaced evenly between the top and bottom. Use a washer and 2-inch screw to secure it to the door. Stretch the chain around the side of the stall horizontally. Screw a lag bolt into the side of the stall so that the chain can hook over it to secure the door. Use a 1/2-inch socket to screw in the lag bolt.
