How to Attach a Bedroll to a Saddle

Bedrolls are a type of portable bedding which is rolled and stored during transport or periods where the bedding is not being used. Bedrolls can be attached to the back of a saddle when traveling with horses, but they must be properly balanced to avoid injury to the animal. Bedrolls can be attached in conjunction with other camping supplies.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay your bedroll in a vertical position on a flat surface. Roll the bedroll from head to foot. Roll the bedroll tightly and smooth any creases from the fabric to ensure the bedroll is compact and well balanced.

    • 2

Wrap a piece of rope or string around the bedroll 6 inches from the right end. Wrap a second piece of rope or string around the bedroll 6 inches from the left end. Tighten the strings and tie the ends in a knot to secure the bedroll in position. Make sure both sides are equally tightened.

    • 3

Slide the center of the bedroll behind the cantle or seat back so it rests on top of the back jockey. Move the bedroll so the bedroll protrudes the same amount on both the left and right side of the saddle.

Locate the saddle strings on your saddle. These are strings that are attached to the saddle and hang down from the saddle body. These strings can be located on various parts of the saddle. Look for the saddle strings mounted to the rear jockey directly behind the cantle on the left and right side. If these strings are not present, locate the saddle strings located on the bottom sides of the cantle.

Grasp the saddle strings on the right side. Wrap one saddle string above and over the top of your bedroll and one string below and up the side of your bedroll. Tie the two saddle strings together to secure the bedroll. Repeat this step with the saddle strings on the left side. Make sure both sides are equally tightened.
