Instructions
Examine the udders on the cow and note any tightening or swelling. Many cows tend to exhibit swollen udders just before calving.
Get behind the cow and examine the cow's vulva. Just before a cow is ready to give birth, her vulva will sag. This will be noticeable as the vulva will droop and bounce around when the cow walks.
Be watchful for restless or lonely behavior. If a cow frequently goes off away from the herd by herself, or lies down and then stands up over and over, she may be close to giving birth.
Watch for any and all signs of distress. Every cow deals with calving differently, but if you know your cow and she starts acting weird then it might be time to separate the cow and get ready for delivering a calf.
How to Know When a Cow Is Getting Ready to Give Birth
Knowing when a cow is about to give birth, or "calving," is important for the well being of the cow and its calf. There are warning signs you should be mindful of that could indicate a pregnant cow is about ready to pop. It's always best to take precaution and prepare just in case you might have to soon participate in a live birthing. If you haven't been part of the birth of a calf before, you may want to have a professional there with you.
