Things You'll Need
- Rope halter
- Leather halter
Instructions
Slip a rope halter over the heifer or cow's head. The lead should extend from the left side of the animal's face if properly put on. If the animal is not already tied up it may be necessary to herd her into a head chute first in order to secure her.
Leave the heifer tied to something solid, such as the gate of a pen, for two hours the first day. This gets her used to being tied and having the rope halter on. Make sure there is enough length on the lead to allow her to lay down. Return her to her pen after two hours.
Leave her tied up for one hour the next day. After an hour begin trying to lead her. At first, stand still, forcing her head up as high as it will go while still keeping her nose level. The head must be held high like this in the show ring, and it offers the most control over the animal. She will try to resist. Spend at least 15 minutes getting her used to keeping her head up. Your left hand should be placed at the intersection of rope where the lead meets the halter, and the right hand should hold the lead.
Slowly step backwards, one step at a time. Apply pressure on the halter to make the animal move ahead, but keep your body in front of her to stop her from bolting forward. At times she will resist moving, and at other times try to burst ahead. Slowly train her to move one step at a time on your command.
Practice leading her on a rope halter for 30 minutes to one hour at least four times a week, starting at least one month before the show. Practice leading her on the leather halter that will be used in the show ring at least two weeks before the show. This will get her used to the different feeling, as well as help your hand adjust to the different design.
