How to Install a Line Post in a Drilled Rock

Installing a line post in drilled rock is the easy part. The hard task is drilling the hole. Concrete is the best material for securing the post because it will bond to the rock and stay where it is put. Dirt can be tamped around the post, but over time, intense rains will wash dirt out of the hole. Bagged concrete mix makes the job easier: less effort is required to move it to a job site in rough country than transporting cement, sand and gravel.

Things You'll Need

  • Sacks of concrete mix
  • Barrel full of water
  • Wheelbarrow
  • Shovel

Instructions

    • 1

Clean all rock fragments and any other debris from the hole.

    • 2

Blend water and concrete mix together in a wheelbarrow, using a shovel.

    • 3

Set a post in the hole and align it vertically with a carpenter's level. While your helper holds the post, shovel the mixed concrete around the post.

    • 4

Aerate the poured concrete before it hardens by pushing a rod up and down through the poured mix until all the air has escaped. A piece of concrete reinforcing bar makes a good aerator.

    • 5

Smooth the concrete surface around the post with a trowel. Do not leave voids between the concrete and the rock.
