How to Tie a Calf

Tying a calf, also called calf-roping, is the process of lassoing, dropping and tying the legs of a calf. It is a practice that is still performed by ranchers and cowboys today as a recreational activity and as a quick way to catch runaway or wild livestock. Calf-roping is also considered an official rodeo sport, with the quickest calf-roper, Jeff Chapman, holding the 6.8-second record in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.

Instructions

    • 1

Practice swinging and tossing your lasso while standing still, unmounted. Try catching still objects such as fence posts. To properly throw the lasso, swing it in a circular clockwise motion above your head. Then, flick your hand and release the rope when your palm is facing downward and the rope is underhanded. Aim for your target and pull the rope once you reach it.

    • 2

Mount your horse and give the calf a head start. Chase the calf with your horse, lasso in hand. Begin to swing your lasso as you approach the target. When you are along the flank of the calf, toss the lasso ahead of the animal, anticipating its continued forward movement. Pull sharply on the rope to catch it around the calf's neck.

    • 3

Keep the rope taut until you are close enough to touch the calf by pulling up the slack as you dismount and run toward it; this will prevent it from escaping or injuring anyone who may be nearby.

    • 4

Sweep the legs from under your calf with one of your arms, careful to keep the lasso tight in your other hand so the calf cannot easily escape. Stay clear of the calf's flailing limbs to avoid any injuries. Pin the calf onto its back after the sweep.

Weave your pigging string through three of the four legs of the calf, making a loop around each leg until you have gone around each leg three times. Tie a cinch or simple knot with the rope and, if competing, throw your hands into the air to signal that you have successfully roped and tied the animal.
