How to Catch a Calf

Apart from rodeo competitions, there are a number of reasons why a calf may need to be caught. It may be sick and need to be taken to a veterinarian, it may require branding or it may have simply run away. Under all these circumstances it is important the calf is not harmed in any way or caused any unnecessary distress. Although the basic tactics for this task are the same there are some tips that will make it easier.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify the calf required. If it is a sick calf this job is a lot easier, but precautions will still need to be taken.

    • 2

Ride up beside the calf on your horse and spin the lasso above your head. Do not gallop up to the calf as this will scare it and encourage it to run off.

    • 3

Thrown the lasso around the calf's neck and pull on it to tighten the knot. If the calf is on the run, aim in front of it with the rope. This sounds a lot easier than it actually is. Practice on dummies beforehand and be prepared to make several attempts.

    • 4

Dismount the horse and make sure the lasso is secure around the calf's neck. If it is capable of walking, lead it to where you want it to go.

    • 5

Take out the calf's rear legs by sweeping them away with one arm and pin it down on its back. This is dangerous because the calf can kick, but it may be necessary if it will not be walked out.

    • 6

Secure the calf's legs with pigging string. This should be wrapped around three of the calf's legs in a weaving motion and then looped around the legs three times so the calf cannot get away.
