How to Put Rigging on a Donkey

Donkeys can be trained to allow rigging to be put on them easily. They respond to gentle, positive re-enforcement and consistency. The proper placement of the saddle and gear is extremely important to the health and happiness of your animal. Gear placement on a donkey is different than saddling up a horse or mule because of their different body structures.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the saddle pad squarely on the donkey's back.

    • 2

Place the saddle onto the saddle pad. Be sure that the saddle is measured to fit the specific donkey. In order to fit the saddle properly, measure how many inches the donkey's spine is starting from behind the shoulder blades to the hind quarters. Take the measurements to a saddling store where they will help you find the perfect fit for the donkey.

    • 3

Position the saddle well behind the shoulder blades. The saddle should not ever be sitting on the shoulder blades of the donkey.

    • 4

Reach under the donkey to buckle and tighten the clinches around its girth.

    • 5

Put your right arm between the donkey's ears and with bridle in hand guide it over its head.

    • 6

Use your left hand to place the bit into the donkey's mouth. Be gentle and do not bang the bit against its teeth.

    • 7

Position reins and tighten down the bridle.
