How to Build a Pen for Laying Chickens

Laying chickens need layer boxes and a place to roost, but they also need adequate exercise space. You can create a 4-foot-by-8-foot chicken pen that will protect chickens from predators and adequately meet the needs of four to six laying chickens. If you have more chickens just make the pen a little wider and longer to accommodate them.

Things You'll Need

  • 6 foot T-posts
  • 48-inch chicken wire
  • Wire clips
  • Wooden stakes
  • Tape measure
  • Post driver

Instructions

    • 1

Use a tape measure to determine the dimensions for the pen and place a wooden stake at each corner.

    • 2

Remove a wooden stake and drive a 6-foot steel T-post using the post driver. Repeat this process until you have 6-foot steel T-posts where wooden stakes were driven.

    • 3

Stretch out the chicken wire and attach it to the first steel T-post using wire clips. Place one clip at the bottom, one in the middle and one at the top.

    • 4

Attach chicken wire to all posts using the same procedure in Step 3.

    • 5

Leave clips on the last post loose so they can be removed for entry into the pen.
