Instructions
Clean the bulk tank with a general-purpose bulk tank cleaner to remove general milk scum buildup. Use an automatic bulk tank cleaner for daily cleaning after the processing plant has drained the tank of the milk. Use the proper amounts of cleaner based on the manufacturer's instructions. Double-check the fitting on the cleaner where it attaches to the bulk tank's drain spout to make sure the insert tube is correctly fitted for automatic spraying within the interior.
Adjust the type of detergent used based on the type of scum buildup within the tank. Certain areas of the country have different mineral levels within the water, which can cause mineral buildup within the tank, while protein and milk stone buildup are simply part of the daily life of a dairy. Use alkaline and phosphorous acid mixtures with your automatic washer to help reduce and eliminate the buildup of additional minerals over time.
Manually scrub the interior of your bulk tank regularly to ensure proper hygiene. Inspect the interior of your bulk tank after an automatic cleaning session, and look for areas covered in film or dulled in some way. A clean bulk tank will have a shiny look due to the stainless surface. Use a long-handled brush to reach these areas, and use an appropriate type of cleaner depending on what type of scum buildup you are dealing with.
