Equipment for Raising Chickens

Many people enjoy taking a step back to basics by growing and raising their own food. Cities throughout the United States are even allowing people to raise chickens in urban areas. Before you go out and buy your first chicks, it is best to have a plan and to have the equipment needed to properly raise them. You can buy or build new equipment or buy it used.
  1. Chicken House

    • Everyone needs a place that they can call home, even a chicken. There are many options for a chicken house, but the main idea is to have a place where your chicken can get away from the rain and lay an egg or two. Chickens like to roost at night and they enjoy doing this in an enclosed area. When you have baby chicks they require an additional heat source, so they will need to be somewhere warm for awhile.

    Equipment for Chickens

    • The equipment that is needed for chickens varies depending on the ages of the chickens. The way a baby chick feeds is different from an older chick, so the feeder and the waterer for the babies will be different. You will need appropriate feeders and waterers based on age, as well as nesting boxes so you can gather your eggs.

    Chicken Food

    • Chickens love to eat and, as soon as you bring them home, that is the first thing they will want to do. Just like the home and feeder, the food depends on the age of the chickens. There are many feed options for your chicken; just make sure you purchase one that is age appropriate.

    Containers for Supplies

    • Make sure that you have containers for your chicken's food. Many animals like to get into chicken food and will make a mess of your chicken area. Your chickens will also become stressed when unwanted animals show up to eat their food. Chickens like a clean and dry area to call their home. Help them keep it neat and tidy.
