How to Stop Weasels As Predators

Weasels are common predators across the United States. They are small, with long, slender bodies and short legs. They enjoy making a meal out of insects, mice, shrews and moles. They also prey on domestic rabbits and chickens. Keeping your chicken coop or rabbit habitat safe from weasels can be difficult, as they are clever, but with some preparation, you can stop weasels from preying on your animals.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove potential hiding spots surrounding your coop. Grass should be kept short. Get rid of bushes and piles of junk near the coop. Weasels are less likely to sneak into a coop if they must do so without the cover of a hiding spot nearby.

    • 2

Reinforce the fence around the coop. Weasels can fit themselves through a hole the size of a quarter, so make sure your coop doesn't feature any holes that big. Replace chicken wire, which is nearly ineffective against predators like weasels, with welded wire or hardware cloth. Double-layer the fencing for extra protection. Make sure you leave no holes or weak spots in the fencing.

    • 3

Extend the fence underground. Weasels often burrow under fencing to enter a chicken coop. You can prevent this by extending the fencing underground around the entire coop, about 2-feet deep. You can use the same fencing material as the rest of the coop, or simply put plywood planks underground to block weasels.

Install electric fencing if previous methods were not sufficient to deter the predators. Weasels will give up on trying to squirm through, dig under or crawl over a fence if they receive a shock every time they touch it.
