Chickens
-
Chickens are a prime example of farm animals that give back during their lives. The obvious return is egg production. In the case of free-range chickens, the animals eat insects that may be harmful to other animals or garden crops.
Dairy Cows
-
Dairy cows produce milk. This is one product that can be used in a variety of ways. The farmer can sell the whole milk to others who turn it into multiple products. Besides being used as a beverage, milk also can be made into cheese, butter and cream. A cow's owner must be responsible for feed, vaccinations and shelter. But, after expenses, the milk products generate a profit.
Sheep
-
Sheep, after the trip to the butcher, become mutton. But before that, sheep produce wool. Wool is used in a variety of fabrics to produce clothing, blankets and other items.
Farm Pets
-
The dog and cat commonly are viewed as pets that produce nothing more than companionship for their owners. However, both animals can contribute to the daily functions of farm life. Dogs are often used to herd cattle or sheep. They also are used to protect the farmer's investment by driving away predators. Cats keep down mole, mouse and snake populations.

Farm Animals That Give Back
Farm animals are an investment. Often, the payoff comes when the animal becomes meat for consumers. But there are animals that pay for their upkeep by creating products while they are alive and can actually make the farmer a profit. Many animals, after a productive life, give the final return on the farmer's investment at the slaughterhouse.
