List of Different Farm Jobs

Farms need a range of employees to cover a huge variety of tasks and responsibilities. From hands-on work with animals to maintenance to office work, the skills required on a farm run the gamut from purely physical to customer service and sales. When looking for farm employment, know your options, terms and job requirements before you apply.
  1. Farmer

    • The farmer is generally the owner of the land and the person ultimately responsible for the production of the agriculture or livestock that is being raised to keep the farm in business. To become a farmer one must own property and produce an agricultural product, which is sold to consumers.

    Ranch Hand

    • A ranch hand works with animals, mends fencing, does required maintenance and performs all other tasks that are required for the smooth running of the farm or ranch. In most cases, this position requires physical fitness and previous animal experience. It also usually calls for the operation of machinery.

    Horse Trainer

    • On many farms where horses are raised, a professional horse trainer is needed to break in the stock and prepare them for sale on the open market. This position requires daily interaction with horses and coworkers as well as horseback riding. The job also demands customer service to potential customers. Previous horse experience is a must.

    Secretary

    • Most farms and ranches require a bookkeeper or secretary to monitor account spending and profits, answer phones and emails and handle written inquiries. A person in this position needs solid math skills, excellent speech and writing skills, and must be patient and knowledgeable with customers.
