Instructions
Listen for soft, gentle grunting when a mother sow nurses her piglets. This is the way a pig "sings" to her young.
Check on your pet if you hear squealing, a sign that the pig is in pain. If the squealing persists, the pig may have a serious health problem. Pigs also squeal in anticipation; feeding and watering your pet may put an end to the noise.
Look around the area cautiously if you hear barking, a sign of imminent danger. There may be a stranger or predator nearby.
Listen for a "soo-ey!" sound if there are opposite-sex pigs in the area. This is the pig's mating call.
Check on the pig if you hear rough coughing. This sound indicates that the pig is annoyed. Other animals or people may be bothering him, or he may not like a certain game.
Listen for soft panting when the pig interacts with you or other animals. This is how pigs say "hello."
How to Decode Pig Squeals
Pigs are among the most intelligent species, expressing themselves with a variety of distinct noises. Just like dog owners learn to interpret their pet's different vocalizations, listening to the language of pigs can improve your relationship with your pet. Listening to pigs as they play with each other, socialize and eat provides insight into your pet's mood and health.
