How to Make a Twine Halter

A halter is used to lead farm animals by the jaw and head. A simple collar would choke most animals so halters use two separate loops to wrap around the jaw and behind the ears of the animal. This spreads out the pulling tension to prevent harm to the animal. Pre-made halters can be purchased but in a pinch, you can use regular bailing twine to create a makeshift halter.

Instructions

Make a simple overhand knot on one end of the bailing twine. This knot is created by holding the twine parallel to the ground with the end in your right hand. Cross your right hand over your left to create a loop in the twine, then pass the end through this loop and pull. You have created the first of the two eyes that make up the halter.

Make a second overhand knot 6 inches down the twine to form the second eye.

Pass the free end of the twine through the eye at the end of the rope, then pass it through the second eye that you made. The loop created by the first knot is large and will go around the top of the animal`s head. The loop created by the second knot will go around the animal`s nose.
