How to Tell the Difference Between Baby Chicks & Baby Turkeys

Raising your own poultry can be a very rewarding undertaking. Fresh and inexpensive eggs and meat are a huge plus for many people. Chickens and turkeys are among America's most commonly raised farm fowl, and create jobs and boost the economy in many states throughout the country. Telling the difference between a baby chicken (chick) and a baby turkey (poult) is fairly easy. This is true even if you have no knowledge of farm fowl and simply wish to educate yourself on the difference between the two.

Instructions

    • 1

Note the coloring of the bird. Standard chicks are yellow or golden in color, while most domesticated poults generally are brown or tan with dark colored spots or stripes. Note that some poults also have a golden color, though these breeds are not usually as brightly colored as many chicks.

    • 2

Observe the size of the bird. Poults generally are larger than standard chicks within the first weeks of life. The size difference between the two is not very great but it is noticeable.

    • 3

Note the size and shape of the beak. Chicks generally have small and short beaks with a golden or yellow color. Poults have a slightly longer curved beak with darker colors.
